Traxxas/Axial Hybrid Scout 80 by Scott Lempert [Reader’s Ride]

We could probably do an entire column just on Scott Lempert’s scale projects, so prolific is he with off-season building. One in particular that caught our eye was this ’63 International Scout 80—not just for the styrene body which Scott crafted himself, but for the unusual mix of components. The backbone is a set of Hot Racing polished steel frame rails, onto which is hung an Axial SCX/10 transmission and rear axle, riding on a Traxxas Revo cantilever suspension. Less conventional is the independent front suspension setup, which Scott pirated from an HPI Nitro RS4-3 road car! It rides on Honcho stock shocks with Losi 40wt oil. He bolstered the frontend with a Blue Monkey Yeti spool in the front diff and an Axial hardened gear set. Power comes from a Holmes Hobbies 13t Crawlmaster Expert motor and a Castle MMP controller on 2S Lipo—for now, until Scott sees how his hybrid front end setup holds up, then he has plans for more volts! The cage and bumpers are made with a mix of 3/16 brake line and 3/16 solid steel, brazed with 56% silver solder. Nice job Scott—that’s an amazing piece of engineering!
