To help eliminate a tire advantage, the Reedy Race uses a very strict set of rules for the “control” tires in the 2WD and 4WD buggy classes. Included in the rules are specifics about how the tires can be treated. For 2WD, the approved tires are JConcepts Gold Space Bar fronts and JConcepts Gold Dirt Webs in the rear, both with Dirt Tech closed-cell inserts. 4WD competitors are using Pro-Line Transistor fronts and Positrons in the rear, also with JConcepts Dirt Tech inserts. These are good choices for the dirt/clay at OCRC Raceway, but are known to take some time to break-in and find their sweet spot. Considering that no “scrubbing in” is allowed, this was a big concern leading in to the event. The organizers decided to add practice heats in the morning for the Invitational drivers, giving them track time and the much needed abrasion the laps will provide to help speed up the scrub-in process. With the first rounds of racing having started Friday morning for the Invitational Class, overall the tires haven’t really been an issue and are providing good grip with fairly predictable traction.
Pro-Line tires are the choice for 4WD buggy, with Transistors up front and Positrons at the rear.
JConcepts Space Bars and Dirt Webs are the approved 2WD buggy tires.
Some of the rules for tires:
• The control tire additive my only be applied in the designated area. No application/scrubbing-in/wiping tires may be done in the pit area. Tires may only be wiped with blue shop towels after tech.
• Modifying and/or sanding and control tire is not allowed. Only natural tire wear from the racing surface is allowed. Two 3mm vent holes per tire are allowed.
• The spec JConcepts Dirt Tech closed cell inserts must be used in all tires and purchased from OCRC Raceway. Foam must be used in the intended tire and may be cut and/or trimmed and/or punched.
Strict rules prohibit any tampering with tires in the pits or outside the complex. The Invitational Class drivers are required to turn in their tires at the end of each day in a special impound area.
