Utah has a hardcore, passionate racing scene, and one of its hometown drivers, is TLR’s Eric Willardson. A long time mod racer, Eric can usually be seen at Murph’s IRCR Raceway, where he mixes it up with the other racers on what many consider to be “the Best Dirt in the World.” We got a chance to find out some of his secrets and have him shed some light on his favorite tips. Pro Tip #1 Always be consistent with your tire sauce program
Check and see what the fast local guys are using for sauce and how long they let it sit and if they wipe it off and so on. Tires and saucing can quite honestly be the biggest setup advantage for indoor racing.
#2 Always check your ride height
As temps change and springs get used more, your ride height will change. This is especially important every time you change tires. No two pairs will have the exact same ride height on your vehicle.
#3 Periodically check your slipper
As pads break in, the slipper will change. I usually check this a couple times per race night just to make sure nothing has changed.
#4 Check the bearings on all four corners of the cars
Always check to make sure that all hub bearings are still in good shape and moving free. They take a ton of abuse and usually during a tumble or awkward landing from a jump they can start to become crunchy and or even break.
#5 When at a new track always try standing on different parts of the drivers stand.
Don’t become too accustomed to just one spot. As racing goes on usually the standing spots choices will go however you’re qualified. Unless you happen to be TQ, your favorite spot may be taken and therefore you might not be comfortable where you are forced to stand.
